New Albums From The Talks and Sounds of Sputnik

The last three years have seen The Talks working relentlessly to bring us a smorgasbord of bouncy, big hitting singles with 'Can Stand The Rain' featuring Neville Staple and 'Friday Night' creating a huge buzz online, replicated by the response of the crowd when the band have performed live.  With main stage performances at globally renowned festivals such as ‘This Is Ska’ (DE), ‘Mighty Sounds’ (CZ) and the UK’s ‘Rebellion’, tweets of appraisal and support from new wave big hitters ‘Less Than Jake’, glowing reviews and cover features from Big Cheese and Vive Le Rock Magazines - not to mention appearing in programmes on various UK TV networks - the bands reputation has surged from strength to strength.

2014’s recent singles 'Don't Look Behind You' and 'Radio' have paved the way for The Talks' long highly anticipated new album 'Commoners, Peers, Drunks and Thieves', and these cheeky Yorkshire chaps are gaining widespread attention on an international level. The album offers an insight into the versatility of the band’s sound.  ‘Light Up’ is an up tempo and anti-love song whereas ‘Ceasefire’ featuring Itch from The King Blues is a hard-edged call to arms, a fast paced and dazzling assault on the senses.

Following another busy summer of festivals across Europe, the band will be taking their new album on the road with an extensive European tour planned for October and November.

Of the album, lead singer Pat Pretorius says "It’s really personal.  Our last album 'Live Now, Pay Later’ felt more like a catalogue of songs, but this time it feels like a real album, a journey. We agonised over this, and we'd like to think it'll bring our audience closer to us, help get the idea and vibe across more clearly."

"It’s visceral stuff and The Talks deliver it with verve and punch"
Louder Than War

“There's a revival going on. The forgotten sound of early '80s ska is making a return in a form more suited to the modern age. 2-Tone has collided head-on with the US ska-punk scene and out of it has emerged a new sound, so new that it hasn't yet been named.”
Team Rock

"It's rare to be so impressed by every song in a set and to go away thinking; next gig near me, I am there!”
Punk Archives

"Oozing that classic Ska sound... Bouncing beats, blasts of brass refrains and catchy choruses.... Truly uplifting"
Gig Slutz

"Dapper British style that harks back to 2-Tone and always retains a
danceable pulse that keeps the skinhead spirit of 69 alive
"
Songeist

"Full of energy and jubilant vibes. Quit reading and let the music do the talking"

Sounds of Sputnik Picks Up National Award as Album is Released

For lovers of: Lush, Wolf Alice, Hammock, Curve, MBV, Twilight Sad, M83, No Joy
recommended for: 2014 ‘Best Of’ playlists; Bands to Watch in 2015; Playlisting

“A beautiful voice combined with the swirling ambience of lush layered guitars to create a unique sonic landscape” ~ Malcolm Holmes (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark)

“Transcends physical and political boundaries to make sonic nu-dreamscapes” ~ Impose Magazine

“Utterly transfixing, as though visited upon by some celestial happening” ~ God is in the TV Zine

A ground-breaking band to keep your eye on in 2015, Sounds of Sputnik defies the stereotypes of Russian music by tastefully mixing electronica, alternative rock, shoegaze, dream pop, and noise,  This project was spawned from a love of bands such as Jesus and Mary Chain, Ride, Sonic Youth, Happy Mondays, and Slowdive.

Last week Sounds of Sputnik received Russia’s top honours at the Jagermeister Indie Music Awards, beating thousands of other bands to victory in the ‘Young Blood’ category and gaining special recognition for ‘Overdrive’, which features powerhouse drums by Graham Bonnar (Swervedriver, Brian Jonestown Massacre), and vocals by Shauna McLarnon of Canadian-Ukrainian duo Ummagma.

Sounds of Sputnik is the brainchild of Roman Kalitkin, a twenty-year veteran of post-punk, alternative and shoegaze bands, and the first Russian artist to remain in the CMJ charts for seven weeks. The debut album 'New Born' is released on UK label Ear to Ear Records. It is loaded with reverb-soaked guitar, penetrating drums, thick bass, and angular guitars mixed with ethereal vocals and intricate electronica.

'New Born' boasts several legendary guests, with remixes from Malcolm Holmes (OMD), psych rock producer Fran Ashcroft (Damon Albarn, Lords of Acid), Russian producers Oleg Mezherovsky (Zapreshennie Barabanshiki) and Morozov (Galaxy Garbage), as well as Mind Movies, who is Brazil’s answer to Crystal Castles. British producer Marc Joy (Primal Scream, Oasis, Bernard Butler of Suede, Mike Peters of The Alarm, Golden Fable) also played a role in shaping and mastering this album.

On Ummagma
This duo emerged on the music scene by releasing two LPs (Ummagma Antigravity) in 2012, followed by 3 more releases on Emerald & Doreen Recordings. The band has enjoyed a full-page feature in Rolling Stone Russia, won Alternative Eurovision competitions for 2 years in a row (Amazing Radio & Pure 107.8 FM), and received 2 awards at the 2013 Australian Independent Music Video Awards. That’s not the only feather in Ummagma’s cap, as they’ve caught the attention of Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins) and Malcolm Holmes (OMD), who have both remixed tracks for release this winter.

On Ear to Ear Records
Founded in Wales in 2013, this label specialises in dream pop, shoegaze, and indie rock. Originally working with local bands, such as Lights That Change and Indigo Sky, the label soon grew to also include several bands from Europe and North America, such as Ummagma and Soundsof Sputnik. Ear to Ear recently released an EP by Lights That Change and plans releases in coming months from Indigo Sky, Blood Lips and Tape Runs Out.
